A budget gives every dollar a job before you spend it. Whether you’re planning for a new baby or organizing everyday expenses, our team recommends starting with what actually comes in and goes out each month—not what you hope a typical month will look like.
Start with a monthly budget. If your pay varies, use a conservative income estimate and plan to adjust when you know the actual amount.
Include the money you can spend after taxes and payroll deductions. Count regular pay and any reliable additional income, but leave uncertain income out of your core plan.
Write down bills that are due regularly, such as housing, insurance, minimum debt payments, and subscriptions. Note each due date so you can see whether your income arrives in time to cover it.
Use recent spending to set realistic amounts for groceries, transportation, household supplies, and other costs that change from month to month. Give yourself room for ordinary fluctuations rather than setting limits you cannot maintain.
Annual bills, gifts, medical copays, and repairs can strain a budget when they are left out. Divide an expected cost by the number of months until it is due, then set aside that amount each month.
Subtract your planned expenses from your take-home income. Direct any remaining money toward priorities such as an emergency fund, debt repayment, or an upcoming purchase. If expenses exceed income, reduce flexible categories first and revisit costs you can change over time.
Compare your plan with actual spending at least once a month. Move amounts between categories when needed, and update the budget after changes to your income, bills, or household needs. A useful budget is one you can keep using, not one that looks perfect on day one.
If you’re preparing for a child, our first-year baby budget guide can help you apply these steps to the purchases and recurring costs ahead.
Choose a monthly time period, total your take-home income, and list fixed, flexible, and occasional expenses. Assign what remains to your priorities, then track your spending and adjust the plan each month.
